Two Arrested After Man Killed in Bizarre MRI Accident

New York, NY- When trying to diagnose a patient, physicians and medical professionals use various tests, machines, instruments, and equipment. Each can be an invaluable tool for diagnosing and treating a patient, but some devices often seen in hospitals have associated risks that can lead to a deadly or injurious accident. While in a hospital, patients rely on staff to protect them from unnecessary accidents, but troubling incidents frequently occur in New York hospitals and worldwide. A prime example of the dangers some hospital equipment poses to patients is an incident that occurred this weekend and involved a man being killed after he was pulled into an MRI machine.

Man Killed in MRI Accident in Mumbai, Two Arrested

Two people were arrested for the death of a 32-year-old man who was fatally injured in a bizarre accident involving an MRI machine in a hospital in Mumbai. Fox News reports that a doctor and hospital employee were charged for the man’s death.

CBS News reported on January 30, 2018, that the man died Saturday after he entered a room with a magnetic resonance imaging machine and was sucked into it. The man was carrying a metal oxygen tank and asked an attendant at the hospital if it was okay to enter the room with it. MRIs use strong magnets, so metal objects are not allowed in the same room as a machine that is in use. The young man working for the hospital told the victim the MRI machine was off and that it was okay to come in, according to reports.

Once the man entered the room, he was pulled into the machine. Authorities said they believe the man’s oxygen tank was damaged in the accident. They said they think he died from inhaling liquid oxygen coming from the damaged tank.

The incident is being investigated by local police, the hospital and by Phillips, the company who manufactured the MRI machine.
So far, police have arrested two hospital employees and charged them with negligence, Fox News reports.

This incident occurred across the globe, but accidents involving MRIs and other medical equipment can happen anywhere ever in New York. A somewhat similar incident occurred in 2001 and led to the death of a 6-year-old boy.

A CBS News report from the time says the boy was inside the MRI when he was struck in the head by a metal oxygen tank brought into the exam room after he was inside the machine. When the machine was turned on, the metal oxygen tank was pulled into the center of the MRI and hit the sedated boy in the head, according to CBS news. The boy died a couple of days after the incident.

Medical Malpractice Claims Associated with MRIs and Other Medical Equipment

MRIs, magnetic resonance imaging machines, are invaluable tools used to diagnose patients. It’s one of the many pieces of medical equipment used in hospitals worldwide. Some machines or equipment used to diagnose or treat a patient has some risk associated with them as the two incidents discussed above show.

Anyone who works with MRI machines should be aware of the dangers of having a metal object near the powerful magnets they use to capture images. Even if introducing a metal object to a room with an active MRI is an accident, failing to warn patients of the risk or failing to protect them from harm is considered negligence and a valid reason for a victim to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

Medical Negligence

To determine if a doctor, nurse, radiologist, surgeon or other medical professional is negligent, a medical malpractice attorney will ask the following:
Did medical personnel violate the standard of care? Medical professionals are required to meet specific standards while treating a patient; this is referred to as a “standard of care.” Healthcare professionals must deliver care according to the standard of care, or they could be considered negligent.

Was the patient injured because of negligence? The victim must show that they were harmed to have a valid medical malpractice claim. They must also show that their injuries were the direct result of a medical professional’s negligence. A less-than-desired outcome is not a justification for a medical malpractice claim.

Did the patient suffer economic damages? To pursue a medical malpractice claim, you must show that you incurred economic damages. Those losses can include medical expenses, disability, lost wages, and financial hardships.
